Selected People

A man takes off his hat, a woman across the plaza adjusts her bra strap, a boy ties his shoe. These small moments are part of an immense, continuous jumble of gestures that take place in the public spaces of the city. Most of life is spent going from here to there. The huge majority of utterances will be completely forgotten, even by those who made them. By compressing hours of time and hundreds of exposures into one photograph — and finding patterns and coincidences — my work preserves some of these moments, and reveals a surprising world that is visible only with a camera.

Pelle Cass is an award-winning photographer from Boston whose work has been widely exhibited, collected, and published. He’s had solo shows at such places as Gallery Kayafas, Boston, the Photographic Resource Center, Boston, and the Houston Center for Photography, and his work appears in collections such as the Fogg Art Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He was twice a Critical Mass Top 50 photographer and received two fellowships from Yaddo and one from the Berkshire Taconic Foundation. His work has been published in the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, Wired, the Daily Mail, and elsewhere. He lives in Brookline, Massachusetts.
